The tunnel of Christ the Redeemer is name after the monument erected as a commemoration of the peaceful resolution of the border dispute between Chile and Argentina. The tunnel, excavated under the Caracoles and the Santa Elena hill, is officially named as Los Libertadores International Pass.

It is a border crossing which allows the passage of all types of vehicles between Argentina and Chile through the Andes mountain range. It is located at an altitude of 3209 meters above sea level and measures about 3 km long, half of which correspond to Chilean territory and the other half to Argentine territory.

After its inauguration in 1980, it has become an important route between Chile and Argentina. This route is closed in winter due to the heavy snowfall and the danger of landslides.

This tunnel is now equipped with meteorological stations and anemometers distributed by Duran Electrónica.
