Detection of SO2 toxic gas.
This new industrial unit that Asturiana de Zinc is building is located in the port facility along the Southern dock of the San Juan de Nieva harbor in Castrillón, in the region of Asturias. It is destined for the storage of sphalerite and finished product. It is the largest in the port, that is itself becoming consolidated as one of the biggest shipping centers for zinc in the world.
The industrial unit is being built perpendicular to the current one, slightly taller and with similar design and identical functionality. It has a capacity of up to 250,000 tons, and 300 meters of length. It will also include conveyor belts to unload the mineral from the ship to the factory without touching the ground and practically without being exposed to the elements. Also, the system is conceived to minimize the dissemination of PM10 particles, the only contaminating agent that according to the regional government exceeded maximum values in the area last year.
The investment adds up to 10,500,000 euros and answers both to the needs of the company and to the Air Quality Plan issued by the regional government. The unloading operations of sphalerite in shipments that oscillate between 10,000 and 50,000 tons originating from various parts of the world, and loading of sulfuric acid, are concentrated in two docks of the above mentioned San Juan harbor.
For the protection of this new industrial unit the DURGAS system with EURODETECTOR electrochemical detectors for sulfur dioxide has been selected, designed and manufactured by Durán Electrónica.
